Are your social media streams completely overrun with photos of friends stuffing their sandwich-holes with footlongs?  Subway is forcing people to try and eat a sandwich, drink a soda, and take a picture of themselves doing this ALL AT THE SAME TIME. I don’t know about you, but I only have 2 hands! God knows how many people have choked on meatballs trying to balance all this food while framing the shots. If you can do it and share your pic to Twitter or wherever with the tag #subwayhearttruth, Subway claims they’ll donate $1 dollar to the FNIH or the NHLBI or who really knows—their messaging is kind of vague.

NEWS FLASH: Like all social media charity promotions, Subway’s marketing team has likely already committed a set amount of money that they will donate to the charity no matter how many #subwayhearttruth photos get posted.

THIS WEEK IN LUNCH BREAKS/NOT BEING UPSET ABOUT THE REMOVAL OF FRENCH FRIES FROM THE MCDONALD’S DOLLAR MENU: This week I stuck a fork into the eyes of all the private equity firms fighting over my lunch money by eating nice meals at Ennju, Sausage Inc., 99 Miles to PhillyCoffee Shop and Sunburst Espresso Bar

timeoutnewyork:

It’s lunchtime, and we want a burger real bad. If you feel the same way, check out 20 of our favorite NYC burgers: Steak & Shake’s Signature patty, pictured, made the list (and at $3.99, it’s a pretty good bargain).

I was feeling pretty bad about all the injustice in the world after watching that KONY 2012 video, but then I saw Steak ‘n Shake on TimeOut New York’s Best Burger listicle and now I feel even worse!
According to Wikipedia, “Steak ‘n Shake Operations, Inc., is a wholly owned subsidiary of Biglari Holdings a company that operates 487 restaurants in 22 states. Biglari Holdings plans to aggressively increase the number of franchises, hoping to add as many as 1500 more franchise locations in the next few years.”  Business Insider says owning Steak ‘n Shake has paid handsomely for the 34-year old Iranian-born Sardar Biglari and his shell company.  ”Mr. Biglari gets a $900,000 salary plus up to $10 million in annual incentive compensation, an arrangement he has said is akin to a hedge fund. Mr. Biglari has kept his fondness for sports cars. Public records show he has owned a Lamborghini, Ferrari and Aston Martin.”
Steak ‘n Shake is not a NYC burger and it doesn’t need the press—TimeOut New York has failed everyone today.

I just dropped the chain all over stupid Staples, the Staples Center, Kobe Bryant, AND his lame face protector. How? I needed to buy a single bubble mailer but instead of going to some kind of soulless office supply depot, I went to JAM, New York City’s #1 HOTTEST destination for envelopes and miscellaneous paper products!  With hundreds of envelopes of all shapes and sizes and colors to choose from, JAM is my new jam!!!

I got my dog one of those fashionable American Apparel fleece hoodies over the weekend. He seems pretty stoked that this purchase supports the domestic garment manufacturing industry as well as the budding modeling careers of sultry runaway teenagers.

Despite being surrounded by great diners that offer a lot of bang for the buck, THOUSANDS of people sunk their money into a recent 14th Street IHOP Groupon.
The person who organized this deal is basically paying Groupon for a steady stream of hilarious new 1-star Yelp reviews. Why bother!

DTC FAQs: Will your system work outside of New York?

People have expressed to me that it’s easier to live chain-free in New York since there are thousands of alternatives all around us. It might be a little harder, but I think you can still  make moderate spending changes wherever you live.  The DTC program isn’t about going bananas worrying about every purchase—it’s about starting with small changes and seeing where you can go from there.

I’m going to Cleveland for the weekend and will attempt to DTC as much as I can while I’m there. Field reports coming soon!
